Get some York on your Fork
With a magical feel, interesting city walls and web of narrow streets, York definitely was a pleasant surprise despite its unseasonably cold weather.
We chose to go for an Airbnb option and found ourselves a little over 4km out of town at a pretty little townhouse. Costing roughly £40 pounds for the night it was a smart choice considering most of the bnb's in town started at £75 and had no parking for our trusty stead. Our host Claire was very hospitable and the room was in her attack, bright, airy with a comfortable bed and more than adequate showering facilities. Walking around the city walls' parts if which you can climb up takes about 2 hours and you could easily lose hours frolicking within the walls. The shambles are very quirky and great for photo ops, they really do feel as though you're in a a 15thC medieval street. There are many deals and pubs you can take advantage of, we opted for some fabulous pub food at Harkers which is a pub in the middle of town. We sampled a delicious chicken and mushroom pie which was amazing with proper chicken breast in it and a burger which was not so great. For £9 each including a pint of beer, the rain on the walk home didn't bother us one bit. |
Portobello Road Fabulous Food
The birthplace to not only the worlds largest antique market but also of the famous Hummingbird Bakery, another delightful discovery on our walk.
If you don't already know about it you will if you visit Portobello Road not because of any signage but the sweet smells wafting out of the doors up into your nostrils. Definitely take the chance to go and have a peek and the gorgeous cupcakes and other mouthwatering treats.
Many small pubs line the roads between the stalls but one stood out for us due to location and menu being The Duke of Wellington.
Situated in the heart of the market area you can sit outside in the sun (which was out and shining for us) watching local market owners wheel and deal whilst gulping down a cold beer.
It is excellent value and delicious food, we chose a soup of the day Sweet Potatoes, Pumpkin and Carrot with a warm roll for £4.50 and to date its still the best soup I've had in the UK.
